Last month I was robbed on a midday bus. The bus company was Transportes Amazonas. I was going from Banos to Cuenca. I had put my camera bag above my head and somehow the guy must have slid the bag back and emptied it of all my electronics. I was sitting in about the 5throw. As soon as I found out I asked all the people in the back if they had seen what happened. Most of them were obviously afraid to say anything. One younger gal told me that there was some issue at one point and that a guy got off the bus an hour prior. The driver and his assistant were useless when I questioned them, I would guess they are in on it. When we got to Cuenca the manager at Amazonas wanted nothing to do with me. They would not call the police. I called the police, and they showed up in 10 min. As soon as they questioned the employees, I could tell they all had inside knowledge, and I called them out in front of the police and I could see the expression on the drivers face that he’s part of it. Walking away, one cop told me that they had the camera on the bus turned off for a reason. He said by law the camera needs to be on for safety. This bus company acts as a hop on hop off along the route, thieves coming and going. I travel the world fulltime, it happens everywhere but not to the extent I’ve heard from this bus company. They suck, do not use them.

I took a bus ride from banos to cuenca. It is a direct bus, the price is reasonable, the seats are comfy. Minus one star because the bus driver drove at the end very fast - irresponsable but happens in South-America. 🚨Warning for all the travellers🚨 Be very-very careful with your belongings! You as a tourist are an obvious target and pickpockets are everywhere! People get on and off all the time, you don’t know, who tries to rob you. If you take the night bus, be extremely careful. I kept my small backpack under my seat, somebody from behind opened it and took my stuff. I started to make a big scandal and he gave me back everything. He said, my things have fallen out and I should be more careful and check them. Nobody helped me on the bus or contacted the driver. Amd it was dark on the bus. I was lucky this time and those things can happen. Just be extremely careful!

If you want to risk your life take this bus from cuenca to baños. The busdriver decided to take a mudroad with several very narrow parts near a steep abyss. Totally not understandable as there a good roads towards baños.
